Traditional approaches to change management in the context of higher education can lead to substantial resistance to change. Faculty cynicism can be a significant barrier. We can rebuild trust and momentum through shared values and collaborative successes.
As provost, I found that it was my day-to-day actions that helped shaped the culture of change at our institution. I developed an inclusive approach to build trust and change-capacity through every-day actions that support large scale change.
My colleague, Katherine Sanders, and I are now offering this approach to leaders interested in building change capacity at their own organizations.
Increased change capacity looks like:
Ready for Changing is a 4-week program designed to advance a change-project you’re already working on. Your project can be big or small, at any point in the process of planning or implementation.

Let’s focus on implementation so that your initiative is more successful and future initiatives are easier.
Dr. Patrick Farrell developed this approach while working in the C-suite. Over 11 years, his innovative approach allowed the organization he led to take on very large change efforts successfully. Those large successes were based on a large chain of smaller, capacity-building efforts that he and Katherine are now teaching as Ready for Changing.
Dr. Katherine Sanders is a long-time colleague and collaborator of Patrick’s from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Katherine’s work systems expertise made it possible for her to recognize and appreciate the magic of Pat’s inclusive, iterative approach to leading change. Her consulting experience taught her that change-readiness is one of the major players in whether an initiative is successful or not. When Pat described what he’d been doing, she was excited to join forces with him to teach more organizations how to build change capacity.
